Photographing Andrea & Russ felt less like a photo shoot and more like the happiest third-wheeling road trip. They've been married for years, but the way they laugh, tease, and flirt could convince anyone they're still in the early dating stage. Their energy is war, affectionate, and a little mischievous-the kind of love that fills a room (or in this case, a giant salt flat) with laughter.
From the moment they arrive, you can tell they're each other's favorite human. That connection is what made this session such a joy to photography.
Location Spotlight: The Great Saltair
If you've never been to the Great Saltair, it's a location that feels almost unreal. Just outside Salt Lake City, the salt flats open into expanses of white sand and sky, bordered by muted mountains that fade softly into the horizon. It's peaceful, serene, and cinematic- one of Utah's most breathtaking photo backdrops.
We arrived mid-day, when the sun was still high, and the wind decided to welcome us with full enthusiasm. Most people assume soft, calm days are ideal for portraits, but honestly: Wind is one of my favorite outdoor collaborators. It adds movement, energy, and unpredictability. Hair lifts, clothing drapes, and everything becomes beautifully imperfect.
The Saltair's natural brightness and clean lines make it the ideal setting for sessions focused on connection rather than scenery. There are no distractions-just a vast landscape that allows two people to take center stage. The wind carried their laughter, the sun warmed their shoulders, and together it created this effortless mix of joy + freedom.

They teased each other non-stop, offered dramatic swoons, sarcastically modeled like they were auditioning for a magazine spread, and then-seconds later-fell into soft, sweet hugs that didn't need any direction at all.
You could tell immediately how deep they know one another. Their rhythm is easy and intuitive. She leans and he steadies. He jokes and she laughs-not because the joke is perfect, but because it's his. Those micro-moments tell the real story.

Favorite Moments from the Session
Even though almost every frame made me smile, a few moments are imprinted in my memory.
The hair-fixing saga:
She kept brushing his hair and acting like his personal stylist, but every time she "fixed" it, the wind undid it immediately. He jokingly told her, "Babe, this is how it's going to be-just accept it". The two of them started laughing so hard that all of us had tears.
The forehead rest:
There was a still moment when they leaned into each other-foreheads together, eyes closed, breathing in sync. It was a pause between laughter, quiet and tender. The image feels like home.
Arms-around-her-walking shots:
They walked across the sand, arm in arm, swaying, talking about how their first dates were "way more awkward than this". She teased him about being shy back then. He denied it. She won.
The Look:
Every time she looked up at him, there was a softness in her eyes- the look of someone who has loved the same person through every era of life and still loves them more each year. Capturing that is the reason I photograph people.
This session reminded me that romance doesn't disappear with time-it grows richer, deeper, and far more playful
What I love About Photographing Couples Like This
There's something refreshing about love that doesn't take itself too seriously.
So often, we think photos need to be perfect posed just right, smiling on cue. But the best images are the ones where people forget the camera exists and just enjoy each other.
These two gave me exactly that.
