Walking Together in Faith: Our Trek Adventure to Martin's Cove
There are experiences in life that leave footprints long after the journey ends. Our stake trek to Martin's Cove was one of those experiences. It wasn't simply a reenactment of pioneer history or a camping trip with handcarts. It was a sacred opportunity to step away from the distractions of everyday life, strengthen our testimonies of Jesus Christ, and gain a deeper appreciation for the incredible sacrifices made by the early pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As I sit down to reflect on the past few days, I'm reminded that the most meaningful moments weren't necessarily the ones we planned. They were the quiet conversations on the trail, laughter shared while pulling handcarts, the tears shed during testimony meeting, the friendships that grew stronger, and the unmistakable moments when we felt the Savior walking beside us.
More Than Just a Trek
Before we ever arrived in Wyoming. There was excitement, anticipation, and maybe even a little nervousness. We knew there would be miles to walk, hills to climb, and plenty of hard work. But none of us fully understood just how much this experience would change our hearts. This year's youth theme, "Walk with Me," Couldn't have been more appropriate.
Every step we took reminded us that Jesus Christ invites each of us to walk with Him-not only during life's joyful moments but especially during our hardest ones. As our feet grew tired and our shoulders became sore, I couldn't help but think about the pioneers who made this journey with far less than we have today. They didn't know what tomorrow would bring. They simply trusted the Lord enough to take one more step. That lesson is just as relevant today.
Faith often looks like taking the next step before we can see the entire path.
Martin's Cove: Holy Ground
Standing in Martin's Cove is difficult to describe unless you've experienced it yourself. Knowing that this is peaceful place once sheltered members of the Martin Handcart Company during one of the most heartbreaking and miraculous chapters of Church history changes the way you see everything around you. The quiet hills, the open sky, and the gently breeze all seem to whisper stories of courage, sacrifice, heartbreak, and unwavering faith.
Walking those same paths caused history to become deeply personal. It is one thing to read about the pioneers in scripture study or Church history lessons. It is another thing entirely to stand where they stood. To imagine exhausted parents carrying children. To picture young men and women who were no older than many of the youth on our trek pulling handcarts through impossible conditions. To think of those who gave everything because they believed God's promises were worth every sacrifice. Their faith wasn't theoretical. It was lived. It was tested. And it endured.
The Strength of Our Youth
One of the greatest blessings of serving as Ma and Pa was watching our youth rise to every challenge before them. There were difficult hills, long miles, hot afternoons, and moments of exhaustion. Yet over and over again, I watched these incredible young men, and young women choose encouragement over complaining, service over selfishness, and teamwork over individual comfort.
They laughed together, they walked together, they carried one another through difficult moments, and when someone struggled, another stepped in. No one was left behind. Watching them serve without being asked reminded me that this generation is remarkable. They are stronger than many people give them credit for. Their faith is real, and their desire to follow Jesus Christ gives me tremendous hope for the future.
Finding Joy in the Journey
Of course, trek isn't only about hard work. It's also about making memories. There were moments of uncontrollable laughter that only happen when you're living outdoors together for several days. Dust-covered faces became badges of honor. Inside jokes formed almost instantly. Simple meals somehow tasted incredible after hours on the trail. Even the blisters became stories we laughed about later.
Some of my favorite memories weren't part of the schedule at all. They were the spontaneous conversations while walking beside someone, the songs that echoed across the prairie, the quiet moments looking across Wyoming's beautiful landscape, and watching friendships deepen with every mile. Those are the moments I'll treasure forever.
The Savior Walks Beside Us
Throughout the entire experience, one thought kept returning to my heart. The pioneers were never truly alone. Neither are we. The theme "Walk with Me" became much more than words on a banner. It became an invitation from the Savior Himself. Life isn't always easy. Sometimes we face illness, disappointment, uncertainty, loss, or challenges we never expected.
Like the pioneers, we don't always know what lies around the next bend in the trail. But we do know who walks beside us. Jesus Christ understands every burden we carry because He has already carried them Himself. He strengthens weary hearts. He comforts those who mourn. He gives hope when the path seems impossible. Just as He sustained the pioneers, He continues to sustain us today.
Gratitude for Incredible Leaders
Experiences like trek don't happen without countless hours of preparation and sacrifice. I'm deeply grateful for every stake leader, bishopric member, youth leader, volunteer, medical staff member, musician, cook, and helper who gave their time so our youth could have this experience. Many sacrifices happened behind the scenes that most of us will never fully see. Thank you for your love. Thank you for your service. Thank you for helping create memories that will bless these youth for the rest of their lives.
A Journey That Continues
Although our handcarts have been returned and our dusty boots have been put away, the journey isn't over. The real trek begins now. It begins as we choose to walk with Christ in our homes. As we serve our families. As we keep our covenants. As we trust Him during life's difficult climbs. As we remember the faith of those who came before us. I hope the lessons we learned at Martin's Cove never fade with time. I hope the friendships continue to grow. I hope the testimonies strengthened on those Wyoming trails continue to shape our lives for years to come. Most of all, I hope we always remember that we never walk alone.
Until We Meet Again
To every youth who walked beside us, thank you. Thank you for your smiles, your laughter, your willingness to work hard, and your example of faith. Serving as your Ma and Pa was an honor that we will never forget. You became more than just our trek family-you became part of your hearts. And to the pioneers whose legacy we honored, thank you for choosing faith over fear. Because of your sacrifices, generations have been blessed, including ours. Our trek may have ended, but the invitation remains the same:
Walk with Him. Trust Him. Keep moving forward one faithful step at a time.
Those are footprints worth following.
